Taiwan Guzheng Exchange Programme Reflection

First of all, I would like to thank our school’s principal, Mr. Seet for giving me this wondrous chance to strongly motivate me. Without him, we would not have been given this chance to go overseas and exchange with the well-experienced Guzhengists over there in Taiwan.
Firstly, the objective of this trip, I feel that; it is to foster stronger friendship bonds and being able to stick together as a whole team throughout our secondary years in West Spring Secondary. Secondly, it is to better prepare ourselves for the next year’s Singapore Youth Festival competition, also known as the SYF.

After I had seen their performances, I am extremely impressed with them. They are able to perform songs that are related to other instruments like the piano with only the use of Guzheng. They are also able to play Jazz songs with Guzheng which makes the whole piece very exotic and unique. I have also been to places of interest to learn more about Taiwan’s culture, like trying their local delicacies and their building structure.

When comparing Taiwan with Singapore, I find that Taiwan is a very refreshing place for me as it is a different country and they have more land compared to Singapore. Well, I felt that the service quality in Taiwan is very much better than in Singapore. For example, the so-called “Atmosphere” between me and the staff is very serene and the staffs are very friendly. Compared to Singapore, their smiles would give you a chill down the spine and they would try to “force” you to buy their products because they are short of money. Singaporeans shop tenants should really learn from the Taiwanese.

In terms of bonding with each other, I find that this 6 days 5 nights Taiwan trip have further strengthened our bond and bind us together as one. Although there might be slight disputes with each other over trivial matters, we are able to get along well with fellow room mates. Although I am not staying with my closest friends, Clarissa , Jin pei and Yuting had given me a very memorable time. Staying with them makes me feel that I actually have more friends than I thought. Lastly I hope that in the next SYF competition, our guzheng members are able to become as one, and perform exceptionally well for our competition.

Culture

From the people in Taiwan, we learnt that we have to be friendly and approachable to everyone. Unlike the Singapore shop-owners, the Taiwanese shop-owners provide detailed explanation and warm welcome when customers enter their shop. For food stalls, they even allow you to have a free sample before you decide to buy.

We also visited a farm and experienced farm life. We had a chance to feed the animals and learn how people survive with the help of mother nature. For example, with rocks, they can form a small cave for us to cook our potatoes. Even though our hands were soiled, it was indeed a good experience for us as we are usually too pampered with the stoves or ovens provided for us at home. Apart from that, some of us had the opportunity to step into the paddy field to plant the paddy. It was a unique experience as we do not have the chance in Singapore to dip our legs into the dirty soil and plant our own paddy.

Also, we get the visit the Yehliu Geological Park, where we get to see the wonders of nature. The chilly wind there makes your mind calm and the refreshing air there cheers you up. It will be a very nice destination to go if you want to relax and enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Lastly we also visited the Wufengqi water fall. Even though the journey there was tiring, it was indeed nice to exercise after so many days of pampering in the hotel room. Of course, the view there was beautiful and definitely worth it after your laborious climb.

Music

On the second day of our trip, we went to a high school in Taipei for an exchange programme as planned in the itinerary. Unlike our school, theirs is an arts school, and they specialize in playing guzheng. They are tutored one-on-one, thus enabling them to polish up their skills in a more efficient way. They first performed us their pieces and it was indeed more profound than those that we usually learn as most of the pieces are solo pieces and did not require teamwork but require a lot of concentration and practice to achieve a good melody.

When it was our turn, we panicked. Not everyone has the chance to perform as they provided only 3 guzhengs to us. We were originally told that there will be about 6 guzhengs. The sudden change caught us off guard and immediately made us panic. Our teacher responded quickly and arranged for 1 from each section to perform. It was very stressful as they were alone, without any members of their section and they were also required to play their parts well to create the melody. Mistakes made would be exposed easily as there would be no one to cover for you. Thus, they were expected to make as few mistakes as possible.

At the same time, we sent Huiho to play a solo piece, it was her first time performing solo. Being a shy girl, she was near to tears when she played the song. Although there were some mistakes here and there, I believe it was a great experience for her. Upon stepping off the stage, she sobbed, without any reason, all the peers near her started to cry too. We could all feel a very mysterious bond amongst us, I was close to tears too. I believe that those tears were not shed out of embarrassment or loss of hope but were shed because we admire her for her courage to perform solo. Three cheers for Huiho!

Apart from that, we visited many other guzheng related organisations. One of which is Tang Ming guzheng orchestra. We learnt a lot from this visit. Tang Ming uses a new type of guzheng which enables the player to change the notes efficiently. It is made such a way that it looks like two guzheng being combined into one, allowing the player to play on both sides. In this way, more variations can be made to the music to create more effects. They also showed us that there are many ways to present a guzheng piece. In fact they used guzheng, along with many types of combinations to play a mozart piece.

Team spirit

Through this trip, I believe all of the members are now more bonded. By sharing the same room, we learnt to understand one another and be more organized. Of course we also learnt to co-operate with one another and learn from one another. Apart from the Taiwanese we met there, the peers around us are also our learning partners, we learn from each other.

We learnt to be more aware of one another when we are required to be in a group. Everyone is responsible not just for themselves but also for others. We learnt to look out for one another. In a group we each have a role to play. For example, one will be leading the way, and the other will be tracking the time and some will be keeping track of where we are going. In this way, we reduce the risk of getting lost or reporting late.

Also, we learnt to respect one another, in terms of privacy of others. When travelling, we kept quiet to allow the tour guide to speak. We also thanked the driver when leaving the bus and we realized the importance and the impact of such small little gestures. Even though it may be just a small word of thanks, it makes the driver feel appreciated and now we learnt be more grateful and not take things for granted.

I’ve gained a lot of experience during the past 6 days 5 nights of the Taiwan tip. The main objectives of the trip are the things we have learnt from the schools in Taiwan and the rest of places that we have gone to during the entire trip.

I learnt a lot of skills during the second day in Taiwan when we went to to Municipal Fuxing Senior High School especially the importance of movements and sound when playing Guzheng. The girls were a little nervous but they did not show it on their faces and put up a good show for us to enjoy. After my solo, I felt that I had a lot more to work on because I played a note wrongly during my solo and made a facial expression which showed that I have made a mistake. I expected my solo to have a lot of mistakes but little did I expect to stop when I have not played until the first half of the song. Nonetheless, our visit to Municipal Fuxing Senior High School was fun and enriching as it was our first time at a Taiwanese school.

We’ve been to many places of interest such as Ximending, Yehliu Geological Park, the tall mountain that took us a lot of energy to climb and so much more! On the fourth day when we had to split to have dinner at a night market, Victoriette was lost and alone. That taught us a valuable lesson not to leave a member alone even if we dislike her because once something happens to her, the whole ensemble will be held responsible. Moreover Taiwan is a big country and once a foreigner gets lost in a place or in a crowd, finding him/her will be a huge problem. It taught me and the rest that team spirit is important and if we dislike a certain person, we must not talk behind her back but confront her instead and tell her what she should improve on.

Dinner at the night market with my friends was very enjoyable. What appealed to me the most was the fried ice-cream – It’s hot and crunchy on the outside but cold and soft on the inside! It was my first time eating a unique ice-cream and we did not regret buying it.

At the Tang Ming Guzheng Association, I learnt that there are different types of guzhengs and the Japanese guzheng is totally different from the Chinese’s. The Japanese guzheng can be played on both sides, the left-hand side and the right hand side. The number of strings on the left-hand side is two times more than the strings on the right hand side. The tune of the guzheng can be easily adjusted just by sliding a little piece of compartment at the ends. I also learnt that it takes years of practice to get up to the level of the girls at the Tang Ming Guzheng Association as they can play English songs such as Mozart’s piece on a Chinese instrument! The Japanese guzheng is harder to play as both sides can be used and the distance of the strings on right hand side of the guzheng, which is where we normally play, is slightly further apart from each other.

On the last day of the trip, we went to the Chinese Culture University Department of Chinese Music. We were very nervous when it was our turn to perform on stage and many of us played wrong notes. If that was the SYF performance, we would not be able to achieve the gold medal. We did not perform well due to a few factors. Firstly, we were very nervous. Secondly, we had no confidence in playing the song and lastly, we were not used to playing a guzheng which do not belong to us. This taught us that with enough practice, we will be able to play a piece together with ease and it also taught us that we have to adapt to change and should not always rely on our own guzhengs in school or at home to play a song well. As the saying goes, “Change is inevitable”.

I hope to see a huge improvement in our guzheng standard as our aim for next year’s SYF is Gold with Honors. To achieve this we should practice hard and not laze around when the teacher’s not around to coach us. I would also like to see us bonding well with one another and with the juniors too.

The culture of Taiwan is very different from Singapore and the Taiwanese are very nice and gracious. Taiwan’s highways and expressways are very clean compared to Singapore’s roads where rubbish can be found on the roads even though we are considered a “Garden City”. Even though there are no cleaners in Taiwan, we hardly see any litter around as the Taiwanese pick up or keep the litters themselves and throw them away when they see a dustbin. In Singapore, we can still find litter around us even though there are cleaners to help us clean the streets.

Taiwan Trip (Taipei Exchange Program)

I have gained a lot of experience in this 6 day 5 night trip. Our tour guides and teachers brought us to many places like Ximending, Yehliu Geological Park and the night market – shilling ye shi. I am first, very grateful towards my teachers, who have trained us well and give us this really great opportunity to go somewhere else other than in Singapore to learn and experience new cultures and new things. On the first day of the exchange trip, we were brought to the Municipal Fuxing Senior High School. There, the performers played their hearts out just for us, the guests. From the first day, I learnt that respect for the person who is playing is very important. Sometimes, when I hear people talking during their performance, as an audience, even I would get angry. From their performance, I can sense the passion and hard work the students in the high school put into learning and perfecting the guzheng. This taught me to respect my instrument and my teammates as well. Without respect, we would be unable to play a piece well as we are an ensemble and we must work in harmony to play something that others can appreciate. After their performance, it was our turn to perform for them. Knowing that the audiences are people who are very well versed in this instrument, it gave us more stress. My friends got up to play but instead of having the chosen 6 to perform, we were only able to choose 3 players up as there were only 3 guzhengs available. Without the whole team to back them up, they were very uncomfortable and kept playing wrong notes. From there, I learnt the importance of having a team and that we should not take things for granted as sometimes, things may not just go our way.

On the third day, we had a chance to experience farm stay at the Toucheng Farm. There, we were grouped together and were asked to do activities together to bind us closer. Finally at night, we were taught how to make the heavenly light. This needed us to work in big groups as the lantern was very big. But in the end, with everybody working together and playing our individual parts, we were able to complete it and writing down our wishes was fun as well! After this activity, I realized that to get the work done faster, we must wok together as a team. The workers in the touching farm were helpful and friendly as well, and they did not hesitate to lend us a helping hand when we needed help.

The most memorable trip where we had to work together as a big family to accomplish an activity was at the Yehliu Geological Park. We were made to climb flights of stairs to get to the waterfall and many of us were giving up as it was really tiring!!! Those that were lagging behind were encouraged by those who were way up front. I could sense a bond that was unbreakable forming within us. In the end, all of us made it to the summit and the scenery was really unbelievable. Everybody agreed that it was totally worth the hard climb up.

At the Tang Ming Guzheng Association, (the second exchange program we had) there were even more fascinating things to learn about Taiwan’s culture! The only association in Taiwan that uses the Japanese guzheng is the Tang Ming Guzheng Association! The Japanese guzheng is not like any normal guzheng. It is able to play classical pieces like Mozart! The Japanese guzheng can be played on sides, the left-hand side and the right hand side. The number of strings on the left-hand side is two times more than the strings on the right hand side. The tune of the guzheng can be easily adjusted just by sliding a little piece of compartment at the ends. This is really unlike any other guzhengs we have seen in our lives. During the talk time session with the big ‘jie jies’ at the Tang Ming Guzheng Association, I was able to learn even more things about how they practice their guzhengs in Taiwan. Instead of using numerals for scores, their scores are all note-like. Just like our normal piano scores. And from what they say, using the note-like scores is easier as they need to tune the guzheng while playing at the same time! Something I’m sure I’m unable to accomplish!

On the last day of the trip, we went to the Chinese Culture University Department of Chinese Music. There, we finally got a glimpse of guys playing the guzheng. It was really an eye-opener as we usually see girls with their elaborate costumes but this time round, it was the guys who caught our attention. Our guzheng team performed well this time as we had the backing up and encouragement of all our friends. This shows that, with teamwork, we are able to accomplish even our greatest fears! During the performance of the university students, I saw many other instruments blended in together with the guzheng as well. Instruments like the cello, double-bass, and there was even a drum set! This taught me that the guzheng can actually be very versatile if the player wants it to. Lastly, this whole exchange trip has taught me the most important thing- one must understand the history of the song to play it well. To play a song well, we must know what it wants to let the audience hear and feel. The movements and expressions of the song would then come naturally.

Lastly, I would like our guzheng team to work hard together to get a gold with honors back for WEST SPRING SECONDARY! Some of us may not be chosen to take part in the SYF next year but we will still learn from our mistakes and make use of what we learnt in this Taiwan trip to push our performances to a higher level. Music is what we players create. It is not all about what our instrument gives us.

The GuZheng Ensemble went on an exchange programme in Taipei for 6 days from 2 June 2010 to 7 June 2010. Our trip objectives were: first, to share the joy of music and exchange ideas with the others on how to improve our standards. Second, to enrich our experience in performance through music exchange and by performing. Third, to build our confidence and stage presence during learning and observation. Fourth, to provide opportunities for bonding and team bonding among the GuZheng Ensemble members. Fifth, to raise awareness of career opportunities in the field of performing arts. Last but not least, sixth, to allow us to make new friends, gain new experiences and develop a globalised outlook. I think the objectives were met as it has been a fruitful trip for us. We share better bonds between us members, and gained experience and more knowledge about GuZheng, which will better prepare us for the challenges of SYF 2011.

On the first day in Taiwan, we were all very excited about our stay and programmes! Upon reaching Taipei, we had dinner and headed for the hotel. On the second day morning, we headed for Taipei Municipal Fuxing Senior High School. The weather was rainy, but it did not dampen our spirits. We were warmly welcomed by the school Principal, together with some other teachers and students of the school.

We were led on a brief tour to some areas of the school as we headed to the music classroom. We settled down and the Principal welcomed us officially. The exchange programme begun and we listened to their solo performances and they were good at it as they receive professional training, in preparation for university. We performed too, and Hui Ho represented as our solo.

The exchange programme begun and we listened to their solo performances and they were good at it as they receive professional training, in preparation for university. We performed too, and Hui Ho represented as our solo.

After dinner, we were taught how to make the heavenly light. We had to fold the big pieces of plastic before writing our wishes on it. After writing them, we went outdoors to fly the heavenly lights!

Early in the morning of Day 3 at 5.30am, my roomates and I were greeted by the morning sun of Taiwan! I guess we would never see sunlight as early as 5.30am in Singapore right?

After breakfast, we were led to tour around the farm. We had to set up a fire then to cook sweet potatoes and corn, and it was not easy setting it up!

We were led to look at the farm animals later like buffaloes, turkeys, goats, etc. We got a chance to feed the goats too.

We visited the rice paddy of the farm too. Walking on, we spotted insects, fruits and nice flowers.

After touring the farm, we started to design our own t-shirts using leaves of plants. We left the farm, had lunch, and visited Wufengqi waterfall. It was a hard way up there as there were really a lot of steps but all of us managed to make our way up and back down.

We visited another sightseeing attraction, Yehliu Geological park. It was raining and certainly quite cold as the wind was strong. Nonetheless, we still enjoyed visiting there.

On Day 4, we went to Tang Ming GuZheng Orchestra for an exchange programme. We learnt more about GuZhengs there about many different types of GuZhengs, and we had a group photo with the orchestra.

After lunch, we visited the lovers' bridge. Everyone were carrying umbrellas as the weather was rainy and windy, but that did not spoil the fun and we still went on.

After visiting the Lovers' bridge, we shopped at Danshui Old Street. A lot of things are sold there, especially food and so I took the chance and bought quite a lot of Taiwan food stuff for my family and relatives.

The first place we visited on Day 5 was the Taipei Martyr's Shrine, where they commemorated soldiers they lost during World War 2 with Japan.

After that we visited the rose garden where there were a lot of beautiful flowers. It reminded me of Singapore as we are commonly known as 'garden city'. There was even a statue of bears made from leaves!

We had lunch and visited Taipei 101, the highest tower in Taipei. We got to visit the observatory gallery high up at 88 and 89th floor. It was so high up there and the cars moving below on the roads really looked like model cars and it was hard to spot people on streets. We got to see purple crystals at the gallery too.

Day 5 was also the last night that we were going to stay in Taipei so we took some photos together as roomates in our hotel room.

Early in the morning of Day 6, our last day in Taiwan, sadly, we checked out of our hotel and went for exchange programme at Chinese Culture University department of chinese music. The students of music there were all professionals! Their performance was great, they mixed with other chinese instruments and drums to create jazz music! Well we performed too but that was not our best performance due to nervousness and lack of practice. Nonetheless, we had already tried our best. The most important thing is to have learnt something and gained experience right? It was an enjoyable exchange programme for all of us. After lunch, we went XiMenDing to shop for any souvenirs and items before leaving Taiwan. My roomates and I bought a gift together for Xinyi as she could not come to Taiwan with as she was ill. It was really a pity that she could not come, and we sincerely hoped that the gift would cheer her up. After about 2 hours of shopping, we headed back to our hotel for our luggage and headed for the airport. We were finally heading home by our Singapore Airlines!

From this trip, I have learnt that in order to deliver the best performance to the audience, team spirit, understanding and cooperation is needed. Team spirit, is also needed in other aspects, so that when we are travelling together, no one would get injured or lose their way. We must also care for others, and not make them feel left out of the team as we are only completed when everyone are together. If one person loses their way, with no one by their side, this would not only affect the whole trip but also the person’s family. In addition, to maintain a good relationship with one another is extremely important therefore people should bond with others and not just wander around alone. We should also try to understand our friends that are around us and try to be more considerate to each other.

Basically, the objective of the trip is for us to learn from other people in another country as the things there might be different from those of Singapore’s and other things which might be useful for the coming Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) of 2011. The nervousness we experienced and the disappointment we felt when our performance was not the best, was something which we can learn a lot from, for example, we need more practice and hard work, if we were confident, we would not be nervous at all. When one is on stage, that person also needs to start to act and smile for the audience and not bring their expressionless face on to the stage. I can always recap on how I performed during the exchange programs, whether it is good or bad. If it is good, I can look for areas of improvement and continue to maintain that standard. If it is not up to expectations, I can reflect on what went wrong and try to prevent the same mistakes and make more improvements. At the Chinese Culture University Department of Chinese Music, I also realized that the Guzheng can be combined with other instruments like the cello. It can also be played in the form of Jazz.

During the trip, I have seen many new things, for example there was a type of Guzheng where both sides could be used to play and the left side of it seems similar to the piano. After seeing their performance, I noticed that there was still a long way for us to go.

Things I have done include performing for the people and also the making of the Kong Ming Lantern. After making the lantern, our wishes were written on it, and of course I wish to improve my studies. On the lantern, there was also something that every Guzheng member desired to achieve, and that was, to achieve Gold with Honours for the SYF of 2011. By putting in more effort and practicing more, I believe that this would not be just a mere dream.
In the future, I hope that the relationship between the Guzheng members would improve and no one would be left out of the team. With consideration and understanding, this would be achieved.

Taiwan Reflections

This trip to Taiwan has taught me many things and values about life. Our trip objectives to Taiwan in the first place was to learn from other schools of their different types of culture and to expose us to a broader environment of their playing. It was also to bond us closer to one another to form a better team when playing guzheng.

On the first day to Taiwan, we were all extremely excited. We constantly took photos of each other and talked a lot. Some of our team members' parents came as well. Honestly speaking, I was glad beacause I would be skipping the holiday lessons that took place on that day and the following days as well. But I knew I would miss out on a lot. Anyway, I was still mostly excited about the trip to Taiwan as it was my first time there without my parents.

As we were on our way to the airport, I felt better than ever. Then, when we reached the aiport, we all rushed about. Our teachers allowed us to have our own free time so we walked about exploring the place. Then, as our flight's arrival approached, we gathered and went through the gate to our waiting area for the plane.

Next thing I knew, we were on the plane already. It was quite exciting. And, we had been introduced to the person who would be coming on the tour with us. He was called Kenny. He was in charge of the administration stuff, and was busy all the time calling others or vice versa. He was rather nice to us.

When we finally reached Taiwan, we met our tour guide called Wei-ge. He talked a lot to us on the bus about the different scenic spots of Taiwan and our schedule as well. His knowledge of Taiwan was a lot. We reached our hotel, which was called Paradise Hotel, and checked in. It was already night by then. We had planned to go to Ximending, a famous shopping street in Taiwan, but it was raining heavily. It caused us to postpone the trip to another day. Thus, we simply stayed in our hotel rooms and did our own things. Then, we rested for the day.

The next day, we all woke up. Each of our rooms had 4 people in it. The room was extremely small. I shared with Wei Ting, Jia Xin and Victoriette. We were all complaining about how small the room was. We had to bear with it for 5 days! However, as we couldn't change, we had to make do with it. Our group were early birds and we got up the earliest. By the time we finished our breakfast and went up to our room again, there was still nobody going downstairs to eat breakfast. We just whiled the time away while in our room watching Korean dramas.(It was nice!) Then, we proceeded to Taipei Municipal Fuxing Senior High School. The school was neat! What I liked most was the art gallery. It was filled with works of art. The one I liked most is just on the right side.

We went to their presentation area, and listened to them play. It was good. The way they performed made me enraptured. However, as the number of guzhengs were less than we thought, only 3 of us were able to perform. As it was too sudden, I could feel the nervousness they had. Although they did make a few mistakes, it was considered good as they were able to remain composed. I am not sure I would be able to do that. When it came to the single performance, Hui Ho, came on stage and performed. However, she did not finish her performance, as she started crying. The teacher immediately asked her to rest and explained to the rest to understand as she did not expect to perform here as she was supposed to perform at the last exchange they had in Taiwan before leaving. She was all right again soon, and our teachers gave gifts to the taiwan school, as a form of recognition.

After that, we went to Tang Ming guzheng association. They gave us an introduction of the association and the type of guzhengs they play. We did not perform as theit type of guzheng did not suit us, and I do not think we would be able to adapt to it that fast. So, we only sat down and watched them play. After that, we were allowed to go and interact with the guzheng they had more closely. I tried playing and it was quite fun. It was not as bad as i thought. We got to experience different guzhengs. I think it exposed us to broader knowledge, and about other countries' culture as well.

We went to Toucheng Leisure Farm, which we would be staying overnight. Our expectations were not high, as it was a farm located deep in the woods. However, to our surprise, the farm's surroundings appealed to us. When we entered the rooms, we all screamed out loud. The surroundings were amazing! Our expectations were low as we thought the farm would have not up to satisfaction rooms. It was surprising for us. It was a pity that we could only stay there for a night, before we went back to the first hotel, whose rooms were small. We felt blessed that at least we could stay there for a day. We made the famous Kong Ming Deng, and wrote our wishes on it. Then, we let it off into the sky. It was extremely satisfying for us, to see our own lantern being let off. After that, we retired back to our rooms.

On the 3rd day, we spent the day at the farm. We took a nature walk around the farm, and learnt about different species of plants and their uses. Some plants such as mint, and a plant that could act as a mosquito repellent, were commonly used in Singapore. We saw different kinds of flowers too. They were nice. Halfway through the walk, there was a shack there and the farm guide asked us to stop. It turned out to be the place where we learned to boil sweet potatoes by forming a kiln, and then putting the sweet potatoes in it. It was hard work when we had to dig the soil. We got to bring them back to eat. Then, we went to the animal farm, where we could feed the goats long stalks of grass. I could feel their strength as they pulled at the grass I gave them. Then, we approached the rice paddy field, where we learnt the process of how the rice we normally eat was planted. It was a fruitful experience for us. It taught us how hard the farmers worked to give us rice and we should learn to appreciate it, rather than wasting food.

After that, we went to a factory to make our own T-shirts. There was also a choice to
make a bag. I chose to make a bag. We could collect different types of leaves from the shelves to make our own leaf prints on our creations. It was quite fun for us. After this activity, we finally left the farm to go to another place called Senkeng Toufu Street. Then, we went up a mountain to go to the place called Wufengqi waterfall. It was the best place that I had ever been. Although I was panting by the time I got up, it was extremely rewarding to see the waterfall looming up before us. We were standing so close till I could feel the spray on me by the waterfall. When I dipped my feet in the water, it was ice cold! However, I think the water must be clean as the water was clear and I could find no source of pollution. It was natural. We made our way down after that. We were all tired by then. Lastly, we went to the eslite bookstore in Taiwan. Some of us who didn't like reading went shopping instead, as the bookstore was located in Ximending. Then, we made our own way back to the hotel and got our room keys. Then, lights off!

On the 4th day, we went to this place called Jiufen. It was a street that sold different types of things that was exclusively Taiwan things. I could find a lot of souvenirs there, and the best part was they were cute and cheap. I bought quite a few things as well. Next we went to Danshui Old Street which was another shopping street filled with things as well. I did not buy anything there as I had already bought enough of the things in Jiufen. So, I just walked about with my friends. Then, Yehliu Geoleogical park was our next destination. It was breezing cold there and there was a woman selling raincoats to us. At first I rejected her as i had my umbrella. But seeing all my friends had bought, I also followed and it turned out to be of real use. A lot of umbrellas were bent over by the strong wind, and it was lucky that I did not take out my umbrella as I was using my raincoat. So, I felt quite good and relaxed as the wind really made me comfy. We explored the different destinations. There was a lot of different scenic spots. They were all either made by weathering or erosion. I took a lot of photos. I could really experience the taste of geography there.

Lastly, we went to Shihlin Night Market. There was only food sold there, and besides we had to eat our dinner there. So, I bought a bowl of noodles there. It was rather nice. After a long walk about there, our group boarded the bus. We waited for the rest and set off back to the hotel. Then, we rested for the day.

On the 5th day, we went to the Taipei Martyrs' Shrine in the morning. It was a place where Taiwan had its soldiers for national service just like we do in Singapore. They had placed 2 soldiers at the entrance. Their job was to just stand still there till their shift ended. They couldn't even move their bodies, except that I saw them blinking their eyes a few times. It was really tough for them. I think that we couldn't even stand staying still for a minute, let alone almost the whole day. Then, suddenly there was a march of soldiers. We all ran over to look. They acted like professionals. Even their boots made the loudest sound. I was impressed. From this experience, I learned that if one is determined and strong, anything can be accomplished. For example, the soldiers could stand there for the whole day.

After that, we went to the famous Taipei 101. It was amazing! The lift that took us up to the 85th floor was so fast that until I felt that it was no different from taking an airplane. My head was buzzing by the time we got up. Luckily, it wore off soon. We took an audio guide and went about the place. It was superb! We could see the whole view of Taiwan from up there. It was breathtaking. Of course we wasted no time in taking photos. The cars down there seemed like models. I could even spot a few people which looked like black dots from up there.

After taking loads of pictures, we went inside further. It was cool too. They had pasted 4 posters of the mascots of Taipei 101. They were red, gold, silver and black. My friend said I was most like red, while she was gold. Red meant being lucky, gold meant fortune, silver being clever, and black being cool.We went further in and saw diffferent types of crystals and how pearls were made and other stuff. Then after that we all gathered and went to this place called Wufen Pu for more shopping, as the girls were all wanting to shop more. The things there were much cheaper than Ximending. Then after that, we went back to the hotel.

It was the last day, the 6th day. We had to go to this university called Chinese Culture University to make our last exchange before we returned to Singapore. We changed into school uniform and brought along our performance dresses to change into when we were there. It was a very good school, so we were all feeling nervous. The guzhengs thankfully was similar to ours, just that it had 5 more strings than ours. I practised and changed. Then, we were ready to perform.

I was so nervous that I felt my hands were shaking even before I entered the stage. I calmed myself down and went in. Overall, I did forget some parts and made quite a few mistakes. I was glad to escape when the tune ended. Through this experience, I felt my determination to play well increase. It was nerve-wracking to perform, but at least I had learned not to panic that much as it would only affect my performance. We should actually be in a relaxed mood through a performance. I learned the most in this exchange.

Overall, the whole team did well to me, as they were quite composed. They made extremely few mistakes, and I was impressed by the way they played. After this whole thing, we went back to the hotel to manage our things and got ready to leave the hotel. We had a last go at Ximending before we left. I did not buy much things there, just a necklace and a bracelet. We also bought a keychain for a friend, who was most unfortunately unable to come as she was ill. Then, we ran back to our meeting place, to set off for the airport.

After quite a long waiting time, our flight was finally arriving. I said goodbye to Taiwan for the last time, and our tour guide. Then, we boarded the plane.

After a few hours, all of us were tired. By that time, we were reaching Singapore. I was glad once again to see Singapore. It was late night by then. We finally got off the plane and went straight forward to see our parents. I said goodbye to Kenny and our teachers-in-charge. Then, I went home.

Generally, I think the team's bonding spirit has definitely increased. A lot of things happened while in Taiwan, and I think that has strengthened our bond. I hope that we can cooperate even better in the near future. Personally, I have also learned quite a few values myself. Lastly, I hope through this trip, I can play better and in the future, use this as a skill to improve myself and get a better job.

Taiwan Trip Reflection

The main objective of this Taiwan trip is to learn more from others and improve our standards, thus the opportunities of having bonding among our members and also build confidence and stage presence for some of us.

During the Taiwan trip , I had been to two schools and one Guzheng Association for Guzheng exchange programmes, which are the Municipal Fuxing Senior High school and Chinese Culture University, thus the Tang Ming Guzheng Association.I realized that they were pleased to see us and had been awaiting for the exchange programmes with us. I had done a lot of things in Taiwan such as visiting the Municipal Fuxing Senior High School, and also enjoyed their performance for us, thus their performance was quite impressive, I was impressed by their performance as they put in a lot of effort in Guzheng , and wanted to put in their best in the performance, and I could see that they had a lot of confidence and stage presence in performing on stage, I really like their performance.

The most difficult event today was to watch my friends to perform on the stage at the exchange programmes because they had to adapt to it as they were chosen to perform and tried their best.Visiting the Tang Ming Guzheng Association made me feel more impressive, as their Guzheng were much different than ours but they could play their Guzheng like a piano and the members playing were mostly teachers, and I was impressed and enjoyed their performance, thus their Guzheng had more than 21 strings which is much complicated, after they allowed us to see and touch their Guzheng, i was impressed by the Guzheng too, they were special to me, I enjoyed the exchange programmes with the association, which gave a deep impression of Taiwan guzheng association.

When we reached the Chinese Culture University, they lent us their Guzheng for performers, and we had to push all the Guzheng to the performing hall, some of us helped to carry the box. When I was carrying the box, I was impressed by the university as the university was quite large, thus that was my first time visting a university. The Chinese Culture University performance also impressed me too, the performance there was awesome and their performance skills were quite strong, mostly they were talented too,the performance was quite different as they put other instruments together with guzheng, and that was my first time seeing they played Guzheng without sitting down but standing up with their feets. When it was our turn, the performers took the Guzheng and tuned well, then went to change into their performance clothing, while the students who were not performing, helped my instructor with the arrangements of the Guzheng on stage,I helped them by putting all the legs and chairs on stage, and even helped them with their bags, by putting them on the back stage. After that, I sat back and enjoyed their performance. I felt that my friends did well in the performance, I like their performance. My most significant learning point is learning from others ,having confidence in yourself ,passion and right attitude towards Guzheng.

Lastly, there are many beautiful scenery in Taiwan, I went to Ximen Ding as it was near my hotel, Toucheng Leisure Farm to experience the farm life, which I enjoyed the most. Experiencing the traditional countryside life is really nice, thus, it was a nice experience for me, there were many fun activities when we were touring the farm after breakfast. When I was touring around the farm,I could see the things that I never see and experience before. The fun activities were fruit picking, visiting the mini zoo, see how they cultural the paddy rice, learning how to DIY T-shirt, Kung Yao-digging sweet potato, BBQ.i will definitely recommend to my friend to visit the farm,as it had a nice scenery, air was fresh there, the room is quite comfortable, the activities there was very enjoyable,I would like to go again if I have the time,it is a place where I could have fruitful experience.

During the days two, three, four, and five. I had also been to Senkang Toufu Street, Wufengqi water-fall ,Eslite Bookstore ,National Chiang Kai Shek Memorial hall, Yehliu Geological Park,Chiufen ,Danshui Old Street, The Fisherman’s wharf, Shihlin Presidential Residence, Shihlin Night market, Taipei 101 shopping mall.

These places were great, it was nice to go there. At the Senkang Toufu Street, I got to taste the smelly Toufu, that was my first time eating it,it was quite nice especially the fried smelly toufu although it was smelly, I enjoyed eating the smelly toufu very much.At the Wufengqi water-fall was another nice experience as we got to climb the stairs to get to the water-fall,it was tiring afterall, but after the toughness, I we got to see the beautiful water-fall,thus it was cooling up there.I loved the scenery very much.

We went to the Eslite bookstore after viewing at the 89th floor of the Taipei 101.The Eslite bookstore had a lot of books and the books were arranged in sections by sections, we spent about 1hours there. At Taipei 101 building, the tour guide helped us buy the ticket to view the 89th floor of the building, then we queued for our turn to take the lift to the 89th floor, the lift was extremely fast,it reached the 89th floor. It was my first time viewing at the 89th floor.I liked the building a lot.At National Chiang Kai Shek Memorial hall, we went down and took pictures a while then got to the bus.

At Yehliu Geological Park,it was raining, thus it was hard to take pictures of the rocks, and it was very cold but I liked to take pictures of the rock especially the lady queen rock.i enjoyed shopping and buying things at Danshui Old street,The Fisher’s wharf,Shihlin Presidential Residence,Shihlin Night market and Ximen Ding. The local delicacies that I liked the most were fried ice-cream and fried rice.I will introdunce to my friends because they must try them,it was supremely nice .The night market was a place where it was nice to go, it had varieties of food to eat and even shop there.I enjoyed the whole trip very much.

In the future, I hope to see more teamspirit in my CCA, I also hope to have more this kinds of trip for the juniors in the future too, this helps to make more friends and bonding among the members and teachers in charge of the CCA, gets to know them better and maintain our teamspirit, so that it could pass it do.

On 2nd June 2010, I went on a Guzheng Exchange Journey in Taipei with my Guzheng teachers and friends. The objectives of this exchange journey are to share the joy of music, exchange ideas on how to improve our standards, enrich our experience in performance through music exchange and performance. It also provides opportunities for bonding and team building among members.

From the exchange programme, we have learnt from the Taiwanese, their performance skills, their style of song played and gain new experience. Most importantly, we have also learnt their attitude in playing and performing and the importance of building our confidence.

On this trip to Taiwan not only did we participate in the exchange programme , we also went on sightseeing , stayed in a farm, visited a few streets and went to see a waterfall. Besides having a chance to interact with the Taipei Guzheng students, we also had a one night farm stay which I like very much and was glad that I came. During the farmstay, there was an activities call Kung Yao where we split into groups to cook sweet potato using dry soil. My group failed a few times but we did not want to give up so we tried a few more times but in the end we still did not succeed.

From this I learnt that not all hard work will pay off, not everything will be successful in the end even if we did not give up. We must understand this and learn to accept failures and learn from our mistakes. This is important in our Guzheng group in order for us to improve ourselves. I also learnt about teamwork from this activity, which is also important in our Guzheng group. We have to help and encourage each other during practices and cooperate with each other when performing just like making the Kung Yao.

We also went to Wufengqi waterfall where we had to climb an extremely long flight of stairs if we want to see the top of the waterfall. There were two levels we could stop at, the second level is around half of the waterfall and the first level was the top of it. The tour guide actually did not expect us to climb to the top but we did. We all chose to climb to the top as we want to see the top of the waterfall. Although it was very tiring, it was worth it. When we reached the top, the place was very cooling and refreshing. It gave me a sense of satisfaction as I had climbed so far. From here I can then understand what the people in the show always says that if you work hard to get what you want you will realize that in the end you will feel even better when you get it even it is just a simple thing because you have worked hard to get it.

I can say that this exchange journey did not go as smoothly as we thought. Because we kept facing problems during the exchange and we were not mentally prepared for it as we thought it will go smoothly like our normal performances. For example, on our first exchange with the Taipei Municipal Fu-Xing Senior High School we faced our first problem that made us very nervous. They only have three guzheng instruments but we were told previously that they will prepare six guzheng instruments for us so during our practice, we had six of us practicing the piece. On the actual performance, we were told that we can only send three students to perform. The three chosen ones were quite nervous as they were suddenly told that there were the only three playing. Normally, there are more people performing so everyone will feel more confident. Because of this there were a lot of mistakes in the song and the person who played solo did not finish the whole song as she was asked to play solo suddenly. However, I was still proud of them because they were very brave.

On our second exchange with Tang Ming Guzheng Orchestra, because their guzheng which is very different from ours, we have never seen or learn to play this type of guzheng before, we did not get to perform.

On our third exchange with the Chinese Culture University Department of Chinese Music, I felt that we did not perform really well although teacher said that she is proud of us. Because during the performance some notes were not accurately played and I even snapped a string during the performance which spoilt the performance. This is partly due to the fact that we are not used to their guzheng.

There were quite a few problems during our exchange but our teacher told us that this will be an experience for us and I learnt that when this kind of situation happened, you will not know but you must be prepared for it.

During this six-day trip, I can really see that their main language is Chinese unlike in Singapore we speak English. In Singapore when we see a woman we call her aunty, when we see a man we call him uncle. However, in Taiwan because they speak mainly Chinese they will not understand if we call them uncles or aunties but as we are used to it sometime we will forget and call them uncles and aunties in English and not Chinese. They could understand that we are foreigners so they politely asked us what that mean. They were very friendly too unlike in Singapore, people will talk to other people only when they know each other. For example, when we were climbing the stairs to see the waterfall, there was also another group of elder climbing down, they smiled at us and even joked with us saying that there are bus-stops on top and even say that we are reaching even though it was still a long way to go. But this lightens up our mood as we were very tired when we heard that we are reaching, we were encouraged and kept on climbing.

I also realized that when the students are performing all the girls will let down their hair unlike in Singapore we are told to tie up our hair. In addition they also do not really have a guzheng ensemble where the whole group is guzheng, they are more like orchestra where guzheng is the main musical instrument. Unlike us, Guzheng is not their CCA, it is more like a subject to them. In Singapore, we are more into the academics but over there, they care a lot in the non-academic like example the performing acts.

I really enjoyed this trip, I hope that after this trip our Guzheng members will be closer to one another and after seeing their students played so well, we will also work hard to achieve a better result, our standard will be raised and we will play well in next year SYF.

Going to Taipei... I was so very excited at that thought. I looked forward to it so much, that when the day arrived to board the plane, I was very disappointed. A few things went wrong on that day. Firstly, there were the hours of waiting for the plane to come. Well, truth be told, it was not really that bad. My slippers posed another problem. The strap had snapped, and at every step I took it would hit my foot and sting really badly. Thankfully, Mdm Liu helped to sew it back on (even though another strap snapped again later). The main problem was the plane. Sure, there were mini-screens where we could watch TV or play games, but the plane's movement left me in motion sickness and unable to fully enjoy myself. Just like this, I began to dread the plane trip home.

We did not do much on our first day, except have a bit of dinner and then went to bed in the hotel. Jia Xin and I claimed the inner bed (it was two people to one bed), but Jia Xin and our other roommates complained about the Paradise Hotel's quality so much I decided to turn in early. I have never been to a hotel before (if I did I don't remember) so I found the small room really quaint and cosy. Apparently my friends did not share the same view.

On the second day, we went to visit a school first. To our surprise, there were only three Gu Zhengs to be played on, so we could not have our performance together, but instead separately. Jia Xin went up to play, and she must have been really nervous, for she was the only person to be playing a different part from the other two, who were playing the same parts.

After that, we visited the farm and had a barbeque. I brought my jacket along, so it ended up with a weird smoky smell afterwards, and refused to go away. Even so, I liked helping in barbequing the chickens and other bits of meat. It was not easy, and most of them came out charred.

I loved watching the heavenly light carrying all our wishes float off to the heavens with fireworks everywhere. I did quite a bit of making the lantern (although it did not quite turn out right) and then we all wrote our wishes on it. I must say, the teachers' lantern was quite a piece of work. I believe this night was the best in the trip.

The third day. We took a tour (I got a mosquito bite!), visiting the animals and plucking several plants. The first animals we saw were the water buffalos. There were four of them, two adults, two calves. Even the calves were really huge, but we fed them and they seemed satisfied. After a while I worked up the nerve to touch one of the calves. It had really stiff, coarse fur. I did manage to stroke the adults too, but I got butted away by its huge horn. It stings, but other than that my hand was still in one piece. We went to see the goats next, and then the turkeys, followed by the wild boars. The geese would be next, if I did not mix up the order.

Later on, we found the paddy field, several of our girls were brave enough to step into the mud to plant the rice. They were really reluctant to step into the mud, but it was a once in a lifetime chance, so they agreed. After that, we visited the waterfalls. Climbing was really tedious - the stairs refused to end. But the sight was worth it. The spray of the waterfall welcomed me as I stepped onto the platform, the waterfall itself crashing down from above. It was really magnificent, a majestic view indeed.

The forth day, I cannot really say much, for I was asleep most of the time on the bus, so I only joined the rest when we visited the night market. It was really not bad, too. Sure, it was oily and everything, but other than that it was okay. I bought a cup of bubble tea, and some fishballs made out of egg and not fish. After that, I met up with the teachers (they were waving at me madly and I only saw them after a while) and we walked around together. I also bought some gifts for my Singapore friends, and I can't wait to give it to them.

The days are running together, and it is getting much harder to pick out one day from another, since the schedule was all mixed up...

On the fifth day, I believe we visited the Geological Park. It was raining lightly, but the place was terrifying, with the strong wind threatening to blow you off the cliffs. Jia Xin and I arrived back at the bus fifteen minutes earlier, and spent our time waiting for the rest. We also visited a garden, and we walked around happily, taking snapshots of flowers that we deemed pretty enough.

The schools we visited were really friendly to us, although we did not get to interact much with them. I must say, we've learnt quite a bit since visiting Taipei.

The thing we did most on our trip was... Shopping! (I skipped quite a bit of shopping, as it was too much.) Most of the places we went to did not have the things we were looking for, but nevertheless we still found something we all liked and wanted to buy.

Going overseas was really fun. I hope we all can do so again sometime, together.

The trip to Taiwan is specially organised for our school's Guzheng Ensemble. The main objective is for us to learn through the exchange programmes with schools in Taiwan. Indeed through this programme, we have learnt quite a fair bit. We learnt to interact with people of differing experience and knowledge in Guzheng, learnt to be aware that there are different types of Guzheng instruments other than the ones we used in Singapore, learnt to adapt accordingly to unforeseen situations and environments, learnt more about Taiwan’s culture and history..

In Taiwan, we had the opportunity to go to many places, such as Ximen Ding [西门町], Taipei Municipal Fuxing Senior High School [台北市复兴高级中学], Chiufen [九份], Senkeng Toufu Street[深坑豆腐街], Toucheng Leisure Farm [头城农场], Wufengqi Waterfall [五峰旗瀑布], Yehliu Geological Park [野柳], Tang Ming GuZheng Association [唐鸣筝乐团], Danshui Old Street [淡水老街], Fisherman’s Wharf [渔人码头], Shihlin Night Market [士林夜市], Taipei 101 Shopping Mall – 85F Observatory Galley [台北101 - 含85F 观景台], Eslite Bookstore [诚品书店] and Chinese Culture University [中国文化大学]. These are all I could list for now. I have also seen another kind of Guzheng instrument in Tang Ming GuZheng Association!

This is how it looks like, but I have no idea what is its name. It has 8 more strings than our normal Guzheng, if I did not remember wrongly. I was glad that everyone has the chance to touch or play it for a while, since we have never seen this type of Guzheng before. Also, this is the only place we had a chance to interact with the other members too. For the other places, we did not really interact with anybody else, probably due to time constraint. Even though the time was limited, I was glad that we were still given time to shop for souvenir as this is the first time I have been to overseas, I would feel bad if I did not buy anything for my family.

I have learnt that one must be able to know how to react accordingly to situations no matter how bad it is. For example, we were told that the Senior High School would be lending us six Guzheng. But it turned out that there were only three Guzheng. Which means, our song that is divided into 3 parts, has only one person supporting each part and it was as though everyone is doing solo since all 3 parts are playing different things and that made the performers even more nervous, some even forgot the notes and had to look at the score sheet one last time before they went up the “stage”. But even though we played wrongly, we had to continue playing like there’s nothing wrong so that the audience would not notice it. Luckily, we still managed to finish playing the song. If everyone was unable to adapt quickly to the situation, the chances of finishing the song in front of the audience would have probably be only 10%

During this trip, I found out, there is a big difference between the people in Singapore and Taiwan! In Singapore, most of the store assistants are quite rude. They stare and sometimes maybe even glare at you as if you’re some shoplifting brat and would only smile at you when you’ve decided to buy something. But in Taiwan, the store assistants would start smiling at you the moment you’ve made eye contact with him or her. Also, even after troubling them, and you ended up buying nothing, they would still send you off with a smile, and not with an annoyed look! Thus, I’ve concluded that, Taiwanese has better temper than Singaporeans.

During this trip to Taiwan, I’ve seen us members arguing and I think that it is totally a normal thing. It’s just a small quarrel among good friends and they will patch again soon, so I don’t think that there is a need to make a fuss over it and all. Also, through that quarrel, some of their bond became even stronger, they became better friends than ever, thus, quarreling may not be a bad thing. In my opinion, through this trip, the bond between all of us became even stronger through a small little incident, and that, we have a special bond that can’t be describe at all. If one of us starts to cry, the others may get affected and cry too, and I think that this bond is indeed very precious to all of us. Just that, there are a few that tends to carry their joke too far and sometimes, I’ll get pissed off. So, I really hope that everyone can control themselves, of course, I’m included too.

Lastly, I would like to thank the school and all the teachers involved for giving us this chance to travel and attain new knowledge and such, even letting us having fun in the process.

Many thanks to all the people involved!

Our main objective of this Taiwan trip is to share the joy of music and exchange ideas on how to improve our standards of Guzheng. On the first day, we went to Ximen Ding. Ximen Ding is the source of Taiwan's fashion. I was so engrossed with all the shopping. Our hotel is in the middle of Ximen Ding which is very convenient for us to shop for what we want.

We had a morning exchange programme with Taipei Municipal Fuxing Senior High School. The performers from Fu Xing High have strong foundation and their performance was excellent. I learnt that I need to persevere with the everyday training in order to achieve a better result. Daily training is very important as lots of practice is required to master Guzheng. We need consistent effort to improve and I will be more serious during practice time.

We proceeded to Toucheng Leisure Farm and we learnt to make the heavenly light. They are constructed from oiled rice paper on a bamboo frame. We wrote “Guzheng 2011 SYF GOLD WITH HONOUR” on the heavenly light and I really hope that this wish come true. While we are making the heavenly light, I learnt about teamwork. Our performance is actually quite normal compared to them so I hope that if we have the chance to come again, our performing skills will improve. Although we did not perform well, this helps to build our confidence and stage presence during learning and observation. We walked around the farm and experienced traditional countryside life. We fed the goat and water buffaloes; we experienced planting rice on of paddy field, digging sweet potato and the DIYing of T-shirt or bags. We used leaves from different plants and used different color to design out the shirts or bags. Using creativity to come out with something unique is a very special experience to me.

We had an exchange programme session with Tang Ming Guzheng Association. In West Spring, the Guzheng instrument has 21 strings with movable bridges but Tang Ming uses a different type of Guzheng which is named as "Zhuan Diao Zheng. Zhuan Diao Zheng" . It is spilt into half, one of the half has 21 strings and the other half has 26 strings. It is very convenient for the Guzheng performers as it solves the problem of changing tune. But performing using "Zhuan Diao Zheng" requires years of practice and it is very expensive. It is very unlikely that our school will purchase "Zhuan Diao Zheng". Although it is very different but "Zhuan Diao Zheng" kept the tradition of Guzheng. Tang Ming performed Beethoven pieces which is almost impossible for performers who use normal Guzheng. I learnt that Guzheng instrument can be used to play modern music.

After that, we proceeded to National Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Danshui Old Street, The Fisherman’s wharf and Chiufen. I think that Chiufen is very special as in the past, the village here housed nine families, and thus the village would request nine portions for everything. Later Chiufen become the name of the village. We visited Shilin Night Market which is considered the largest and most famous night market in the city. We walked around in groups of four and we ate fried chicken steak, tempura, bubble tea, stinky tofu, oyster vermicelli, pig blood pudding and Taiwanese sausages.

We visited Taipei 101 which is a landmark skyscraper located in Xinyi District. It is ranked the second tallest buildings in the world. Taipei 101 comprises 101 floors above ground and 5 floors underground. We visited the 85th floor which has an observatory restaurant. We observed the world largest tuned mass damper which is suspended from 92th to 88th floor. Tickets cost NT$400 and it allowed us to excess to 88th floor using the world fastest elevator. We proceeded to Wu Fen Pu which is the heaven of teenagers as the clothes were cheap but with good quality. We bought bags, clothes and accessories there.

We visited Chinese Culture University Dept, of Chinese Music. The performers there performed in a group, in a Chinese orchestra way, using many types of instruments to perform. Their performance consists of Guzheng, Dizi, Sheng, Violin and other instruments but our performance only consisted of Guzheng. They performed a piece that used drum set as the main rhythm and used Guzheng to play the piece. They performed it in a modern way. The Taiwan trip changed my impression, now I know that Guzheng need not be played in traditional and fixed way. The piece that was used in Taiwan is very different from the pieces used in Singapore. In Singapore, teacher often changed pieces but in Taiwan, Taiwanese use their creativity and changed piano pieces into Guzheng pieces. Taiwan trip provided opportunities for bonding and team building among members and we became closer as in Taiwan, we stick together and we helped each other. I hope to see that during the next practice, the members can be more cooperative and help each other when we face difficulties. Lastly, I really hope that Guzheng can get gold with honors in 2011 SYF so that we will get the chance to travel again during the June holiday as it is the last chance for the sec three members.

Our school's Guzheng Ensemble organized an overseas exchange programme to Taipei. The main objectives are to let us know more about guzheng cultures from other country. Through this programme, we can share the joy of music and exchange ideas on how to improve our standards. For example, we had an exchange programme in Taipei Municipal Fu-Xing Senior High School. Their standards are far more superior than ours. I was deeply impressed by their performance, especially the one done by the solo. They were great and awesome. I hope I can be like them and perform a great performance for our school.

My performance in Taipei Municipal Fu-Xing Senior High School was quite bad as the school only provided three guzheng instruments for us. It was quite difficult and hard to perform in front of them. From the past I did not try to perform only with three people, so it was quite difficult for me to do it. However, I have overcome my fear.

After the exchange programme, we went to Toucheng leisure farm. The activity that I enjoyed most was lantern making. Although that was my first time learning how to make a lantern, I had a lot of fun with all my friends. It was wonderful to see that everyone was working together in unity to make a lantern. After which, everyone had an opportunity to write down her wishes on the lantern paper. I hope all our wishes will materialise. Through this activity, I have the opportunity to develop my interest in lantern. Most importantly, through this activity, we were able to create a long term relationship with our members and to form an incredibly close relationship. Eating breakfast together also had strengthened us as a unit and we were more emotionally stable and socially developed.

Besides that, this exchange programme also allowed us to make new friends, gain new experience and develop a globalised outlook. We also had an exchange programme with TANG Ming Guzheng Orchestra. Their standards were high and mighty. Their guzheng instruments are different from the ones we used to play in school. Their guzheng instrument is called zhuandiaozheng. It was quite interesting. Their performance was great and amazing. They used lots of ideas in making new songs using their instrument. For instance, they played songs such as like Jazz. It was really great! I was speechless at that moment. I really enjoyed and was very impressed by their performance. I hope I can get to learn Jazz one day as I love to learn new thing especially those I have never tried before. Their solo piece was nice and good. They seemed to be immersed into their own music while they were playing. I am sure they were also feeling nervous too but they did not show it and manage to conquer their fears. As a result, the solo piece went smoothly and without flaws. After which, we had a chat with the students. We also had an opportunity to try our hands on the zhuandiaozheng. It was really fun!!!! Honestly, I hope I could buy a zhuandiaozheng too. Although the zhuandiaozheng produces different sound compared to the normal guzheng, it sounds really nice. Those students were mostly older than us. Of course, they have been playing the guzheng longer than us. They also shared their experiences on how they got through. I realised playing guzheng is not only just for fun, it requires a great deal of determination.

Last day of the trip, we had an exchange programme with the Chinese Culture University Department. Through this programme, it helped to build our confidence and stage presence through learning and observation. Their performance was different from the other two schools which we visited. I was extremely shocked when their performance was over. They did not used only guzheng for performance, they also used other instruments such as cello, bass drum, kettle drum and others. Overall, the performance was awesome! They had great affinity that we do not have. When it was our turn to perform, everyone was very nervous and anxious. I think we did not have enough practice as a result our performance ended up in quite a mess. Some of us played wrong notes, which included me. I thought I could perform well, but I think I lack the confidence. If this is a real competition, I think we will definitely lose. However, the mostly important thing is that we learn from our mistakes and we ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes.

On the whole, I think team spirit is most important. If we lack this, we may lose in competitions. This exchange programme had provided lots of opportunities for bonding and team building amongst us. I hope to see our bonds and friendship flourish in the future. As teamwork is an essential element, I hope to see that everyone keeps the fire burning inside her heart and mind so that we can work together as a team to achieve the goals we set for ourselves. The team members should not be selfish and think about themselves only. We should be more prepared and work in unity for the challenges in 2011.
